Gym Rules

Hygiene

Jiu jitsu is a very close-contact activity. If good hygiene standards are not maintained, we run the risk of spreading skin infections and other illnesses around the gym, as well as becoming the partner no one wants to train with.

  • Please do not attend class if you have a cold as this can easily spread to your training partners.
  • If you have any skin infection, such as ringworm or staph, please do not train until it is resolved.
  • Come to class clean and with a clean gi. You will be in very close contact with your training partners during the class, and there is nothing worse than having to train with someone who is dirty and smells bad.
  • Make sure you trim your finger and toenails regularly. Long or sharp nails can cut your training partner, or can get hung up and torn during gi grips.

Mat Etiquette

  • Shoes are not allowed on the mats.  Shoes should be left on the rubber mats in the waiting area.
  • Try to keep your focus during the class on jiu jitsu. The mats are a place for training, and it is best to avoid discussions about politics, current affairs, religion, and other sensitive issues.
  • This is training and not fighting. Keep it safe and respectful.
  • Always respect the tap. Tap when a submission is inevitable. You not only risk injury, but you waste time when you could have reset and started again. If your opponent hasn’t tapped and you feel they are in danger because they are holding on too long or don’t understand the danger they are in, you should release.
  • Try to keep your rolling light and relaxed, and match your training partner’s level of intensity to ensure you both get as much as possible out of the roll.

Other Gym Rules

  • Childcare is not provided for early drop-offs or late pick-ups.  Youth participants should arrive no more than 10 minutes prior than class times and be picked up promptly at end times.
  • For safety reasons children are not allowed in the weight room at any time.
  • Only class participants are allowed on the mats during classes.
  • Please help us maintain a clean and orderly waiting area by monitoring young children and  returning toys/books/games to their storage bins/areas before you leave.
  • The upstairs deck space is off-limits unless opened by an instructor.
